This Couple’s Penthouse Apartment Is A Modern Tropical Escape!

This 440-square meter two-floor penthouse is a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila. Residing in the unit is a young family of four. The couple has been married for seven years now and has two beautiful girls. They reside in this luxurious penthouse apartment in the heart of Manila. It has a 90-degree view of the Makati skyline and peeks the Manila ports.

With a column in the middle of the unit, the best way to hide it was through the tinted mirror that makes it “invisible” in the space.

While the home is newly renovated, the lady of the house grew up in the same condo years back, her parents live a couple of floors down from their unit. Being an interior design aficionado, the lady of the house was very hands on with the one-year design process. Her design team was composed of best names in the design industry. On the list is architect Alfred Wieneke, Isabel Lozano of Mel Associates, and Mark Wilson and Nikki Tayag of We Lighting Design.

The couple were both active in turning their penthouse into a home. The space is a collection of pieces that were striking for the couple. Some furniture pieces were custom-made from Philux, while others are from their travels abroad, especially from South Africa.

“It was great to work with people who are so open to collaboration. We had ideas thrown out and we picked what fit our family and lifestyle best,” the lady of the house shares.

“I sourced every piece here because it’s what I’m passionate about,” she shares. “My husband was more particular with the artwork, where to put the artwork, and what light to use. I’m into the loose furniture and soft furnishings,” she points out. The painting of the woman in the living room by Lionel Smith was the main inspiration for the living room. The color palette was derived from the painting.

Having two young girls, one 11-month old and one almost turning 5 this year, the home’s two-out-of-three bedrooms are what other little girls can only dream of. One is scantily dressed in pink while the other is bold and wild with leopard prints.

While the home is a showcase of beautiful furniture perfectly curated and harmoniously put together, as if it was a page from a furniture catalog, the vast apartment is kept personal with antiques, hand-me downs, and collectibles of the owners. “Each piece in the home represents something we love as a family and it represents us. There’s a touch of Filipino, and a touch of African style because we love Africa,” she passionately adds. Her father was born in Africa and the family heads there once a year.

Aside from aesthetics, they prioritized how the large space would work for them as a family. There’s ample space for bonding together as a family after a busy day, but also enough to entertain guests when the couple hosts.

“The lifestyle has to be the priority. While I do love form, function is so important. Form and function are two things very important in any space,” the lady of the house points out.

Residing in the unit for a year now, the lady of the house cites that the home is in the constant state of evolving with their young family. “Just how our lives and styles evolve, our homes should evolve, too,” she adds.

“It’s so luxurious where you can have a space where you can really breathe,” she expounds on the penthouse’s spacious and airy loft. Indeed, in a city like Manila where urban space is limited to grow nowhere but up, a broad space like this is a gem. The couple and their design team did a great job at further accentuating the penthouse’s beauty through customizing the space to fit their family’s needs and design preferences.
