Look Inside A Charming Modern Victorian Condo In Makati CBD
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Makati central business district is a humble abode dressed up in a neutral palette, pops of gold, and hints of blue with Victorian details carefully laced with a modern touch. The charming space is nestled in one of the high-rise condominiums in the area, serving as a new home to a trusted dental doctor by local celebrities and patrons from the Middle East who don’t mind flying into the Philippines to get their sets of teeth taken care of.
Before the modern Victorian condo came to be, Dr. Daisy Miranda-Arevalo first liked the feel of a Mediterranean style home, relating to her nickname, “Arab Princess,” by her friends and family. Her son and her trips overseas changed her mind, however. Her son convinced her to have something modern, deviant from the other properties they own. While she considered that, she eventually veered towards the Victorian design style, influenced by the decor pieces she usually sees during her travels, which her daughter-in-law told the interior design team that completed the condo unit’s current look.
Desaurum Co. Interior Design Studio, headed by interior designer Honey Mutia and interior design consultant Rosalinda Manduriao, married the Victorian feel that Dr. Arevalo wants with the modern touch that her son suggests. The design team created the base design modern and neutral in color and introduced the Victorian vibe with golden curves and curls in the decor, details, and accent pieces throughout the unit.
“We stuck to a neutral base color just in case doktora changes her mind and no longer wants a Victorian style, it’s easy to rearrange,” explains Honey. Rosa adds, “Doktora likes gray, greige, neutrals. Plus, with condos this size, ‘pag neutrals naa-amplify ‘yong pagiging light and subtle.”
In the dining-living area, the design team kept the dining and living set gray with either wooden or golden details. And given that the space is in an open layout, Honey and Rosa placed an area rug from Decoliving Manila to give a sense of separation of each area without actually dividing them.
Shelves and mostly handle-less cabinets are carefully placed on or along the walls to maximize the floor area. Rosa shares that they opted for cabinets with no handles so that they won’t look and feel straight-up storage units. They wanted to keep the modern Victorian condo feel without sacrificing function and vice versa. A mounted flatscreen TV even gets a stylish upgrade with a custom golden frame doubled by a mirror frame that reflects the natural light from the window on the other side making the room clearer and lighter. The designers also placed a beveled mirror at the bar/breakfast nook in the kitchen to give the illusion that the kitchen is more spacious, while also keeping it stylish.
Honey and Rosa share that they want to always use stylish yet multi-functional pieces when they design small units like this because that’s how one can really maximize a limited space. In this condo for instance, the mirrors boost the style, size, and lightness of the space. The bar can turn into a breakfast nook, extra counter space for cooking, a catch-all area, or a work station. The coffee table is a clock, and the dining table can even be expanded to accommodate more guests.
Aside from keeping to the preferred design style of the owner, storage is another thing the designers took into account. “From the get go, we really considered the storage system in the unit, given that the condo is small,” Rosa explains. “The cabinetry here, except the closet in doktora’s son’s room, are all customized to fit the unit and to fit the owners’ things. Actually it’s doktora‘s son who required a lot of storage kasi marami siyang gamit, mga collection,” Honey adds.
“He likes to collect caps, toy figures and cars, even those collectible toy cars from gasoline stations!” Dr. Arevalo shares what her son needs the storage for. Hence, in the son’s bedroom, aside from a wall of closet and hanging shelves, he has more under the bed and on the headboard.
Collecting kind of runs in the blood, too. Dr. Arevalo also has her collection of designer bags, which the design team suggested to display on open shelves instead of enclosing them in cabinets because molds thrive in those areas. So, Dr. Arevalo’s bags are now displayed on a shelf from Moss Manila that matches the cream and gold scheme of the master bedroom.
“I have no idea how it looked like before today because I left everything to Honey and Rosa. I trust them and I am proud of them! And now that I am here seeing it for myself, ang ganda! Kasi ito talaga ‘yong gusto ko. Nandito ‘yong touch ng pagiging prinsesa ko,” Dr. Arevalo laughs as she shares her reaction when she saw the fully-furnished modern Victorian condo of her own.
“I deserve this,” the dentist with over 30 years of dental practice concludes.
