This Café Offers Food That Tastes As Good As Its Boho Interiors

For new café owner, Beatriz Melendres , the road to a successful food business wasn’t in culinary arts or mastering the art of cooking at a young age. Sometimes, following your passion—even if you have to start from scratch—is enough to become a good cook, and an even better baker. Bea’s passion for baking didn’t start until after she graduated from college. A self-taught baker, she studied at CCA (Center of Culinary Arts), where she met a lot of people and made lasting connections, one of whom eventually helped her start her business as a dessert supplier.

Providing dessert and pastries to some of the leading coffee shops in the metro, Bea opened her first café at Las Pinas named Flour Jar. This dessert haven was her former commissary transformed into a café. Designed with the help of her father, Vic, the interiors are inspired by Bali mixed with tropical vibes from the Philippines. “I want it cozy so when you eat here, para kayong nasa house niyo,” she shares. Flour Jar boasts of its white interior walls, wood elements, and plants that take into account Bea’s love for nature. In contrast to the busy structures of some cafés, she chose design elements that are simple and clean.

For her, the quality and taste of her food are her priority. “Hindi kami tipid sa ingredients kasi gusto ko din mag-shine ‘yong flavor.’Yon ang hina-highlight ko, hindi ‘yong looks.” Diners will see this in her bestselling dishes like the Bomba Nachos and the healthy Island bowls. Experimenting regularly on different flavors for her best selling cakes and hand rolled donuts, Bea plans to offer more options for her customers to enjoy.

This humble baker from Las Piñas certainly prioritizes taste over looks, making sure that her creations aren’t only Instagram-worthy, but also something people can truly enjoy—creating within the process a place where families can meet and enjoy the sweeter things in life.
